Volume One: The Big Picture: From the series ~ Music Principles for the Skeptical Guitarist. A single note may be the easiest thing to play on the guitar, but chords are more useful at first. So after laying some groundwork with the Musical Alphabet, we jump right into chords and see how they can be used to play songs in different keys. In this "First Approach" to music theory, we'll try not to get too bogged down in details and technicalities. It will be a broad survey, a reconnaissance mission to get the lay of the land. There are plenty of examples using bits of songs that you already know. You will also be exposed to "Bunches of Useful Chords."
In the "Second Approach," we rewind to the beginning and start all over again with the Musical Alphabet. You'll see, step by step, how notes can be used to construct Major Scales, and then how Major Scales can be used to construct triads (3-note chords) and Chord Families. Have you ever heard of the "1-4-5" system? Good stuff! The climax of Volume One is when we see how Chord Families are related to each other through the mighty Circle of Fifths. We'll check out Secondary Dominants, do some Yuletide Backcycling and finish up with a treatment of Minor Keys.
