Some Background:

James Hewett, a native Texan, began building acoustic guitars in 1993. He is a self - taught Luthier who naturally gravitated to the craft through his love for great acoustic instruments and his gift for working with his hands. Today, he works full-time building steel string acoustic guitars, acoustic archtop jazz guitars, classical guitars and Dyer style Harp Guitars -- many with intricate and detailed inlays. In addition, he builds re-creations of Baroque and Renaissance instruments like organistrums, symphonies, and lyres ~ and does full-scale repairs, restorations and custom inlay work for six guitar stores in the Houston, Texas area.

• Hewett D: This is the One, folks. Actual, old growth, quarter-sawn, very old, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with green, orange, black, gold, cinnamon, brown, just all the RIGHT colors you want to see in the best grade Brazilian. The top is a 90 year old German spruce top. Handsome snakewood bindings on the body & fretboard. Snakewood bridge pins with abalone dot. The top has a cool marquetry surrounding it. Attractive Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and the bridge, rosette, truss rod cover & heelcap are Brazilian as well. The rosette has Abalone outline rings, very tasteful. Abalone back center strip, as well. The fingerboard has purfling lines outlining it, a nice touch. Bookmatched Brazilian rosewood headstock faceplate. Chrome Gotoh 510 tuning machines with ebonoid buttons. Oh yeah, Jim made the pickguard out of Brazilian rosewood too! The back & sides are flitch cut with the flame matching and the pickguard and headstock faceplate are matching pieces. I have to tell you, we've never heard another guitar that sounds like a Hewett. Somehow they sound huge, but with an unexpected clarity. No muddiness here, and the bass is as big as you can imagine. Fossilized ivory nut (1 3/4") & saddle. 25 21/32" scale length. OHSC included. • Hewett Custom Brazilian GC: If you are after the ONE GUITAR, this is IT! OLD GROWTH, beautifully figured Brazilian back and sides with a German spruce top that is over 70 years old. This guitar is dubbed, "The Sojourner" due to the unique and amazing inlay on the Brazilian fretboard. This is only the 2nd time this inlay has been done, the other guitar bearing this image is owned by Jim Hewett, himself. Jim first created this scene in 1978, as a mural on an apartment wall. Tho' he rented at the time, when he moved out the management chose to leave the artwork on the wall. Wonder if it's still there???... Anyway, back to this guitar. The headstock and rosette are bookmatched Brazilian, and the bridge is Brazilian as well. The top purfling is a very unique Southwestern Style Wood Mosaic. The body and neck binding is quilted Mahogany. Chrome Gotoh 510 super tuners and the MOP headstock logo, complete the picture. 1 3/4" nut width. 25 21/32" scale length. • Hewett HARP Guitar: What an outstanding instrument! Aged Honduran Mahogany back and sides with a fine Sitka spruce top. Tree of Life fingerboard Inlay. Custom Slotted Headstock with Chrome Tuners. Gorgeous Brazilian on both headstock faceplates. MOP "Hewett" headstock logo. Both rosettes are Abalone and Abalone encircles the entire top. The bridge is Brazilian Rosewood and has abalone accents on each wing. The fretboard and body are bound in Canadian Holly. The neck is Amazon Mahogany with a Dual-Action truss rod. The 5 drone string tuners are Waverly tuners with Ivoroid buttons. 25 21/32" scale length. Cow Bone nut and saddle. The nut width is 1 11/16". The overall length of this wonderful creation is 42 1/2". The lower bout measures 15 3/4". This instrument is dynamite to play, light in weight, pure in sound. Jim suggests ~ A simple tuning that works well for the average player is to just tune the six string to standard EADGBE and the sub bass strings to DBCGE with the D being the one closest to the six strings.
