In Bob's words: \u003cem\u003e\"My tailpiece arrangement is very pure and eliminates metal brackets, which dampen the guitar's acoustics.\"\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eBlack Schaller tuning machines with Ebony buttons\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThis unique guitar was based on Bob's \u003cstrong\u003e16\" guitar\u003c\/strong\u003e mold. To understand The Tree's history we have to go back to 1965, when Belize was British Honduras... Deep in the rainforest jungle of Chiquibul, a small party of loggers happened upon a towering mahogany. At over 100 feet high and 10 feet in diameter at the base, this tree was massive in every sense of the word. Best estimates would later place it at approximately 500 years old. While felling an average sized tree can prove to be a formidable task—felling a tree wider than a bus must have required a great deal of bravery, a great deal of insanity, or an equal measure of both. Whatever their state of mind at the time, the loggers vowed to complete their quest. According to legend, and armed with nothing but their axes, the loggers began the long and arduous operation of chipping away at the base of The Tree. Fragment by fragment. Inch by inch. Weeks of manual labor in the sweltering, humid climate would have been required to prepare this tree for felling. Then, finally, The Tree was ready to fall. The loggers' many years of experience had prepared them for this moment. With everything in order, the team was ready for the giant to come tumbling down. It is at this point in the story, when the story and The Tree take an unexpected turn. Instead of landing where intended, The Tree fell backward, coming to a rest at the bottom of a ravine—now impossible for the loggers to extract with their limited machinery. An unfortunate twist of fate for this small team of loggers, this accident would, nevertheless, prove fortuitous for The Tree. With the unanticipated reverse dive delaying its departure from Honduras (now Belize), The Tree would later make a much grander entrance onto the world stage. However, for the next 10 years, The Tree would call the forest floor its home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is possible that it would have spent the rest of its days lying in the ravine—its incredible beauty never to be seen by the human eye and its untapped potential squandered away through a slow and unrelenting progression of rot and decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFortunately,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eThe Tree\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewas to have a fate much more glamorous.....\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough flooding prevented the two from visiting\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eThe Tree\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003efor a month, upon first sight Novak \"recognized its significance almost immediately\" [1]. His experience with other figured hardwoods led him to believe this specific tree could be quite unique. This was certainly no ordinary tree. It had figure unlike anything he had ever seen. In keeping with this simple elegance, I leave the fingerboard unadorned. The \u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003etailpiece is sculptured out of ebony and attached solidly to the body\u003c\/span\u003e by a brass bracket. The overall tone is other worldly. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #000000;\"\u003eHere's the Legend of THE TREE\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1965 in Honduras’ Chicibul Jungle a group of loggers discovered something incredible: a magnificent tree over 100ft long and 10 ft in diameter at the base. The entire tree was decorated in a spiraling bark that hinted at the serious potential of highly figured wood. With great pride and perseverance these loggers felled the tree on that day knowing that the closest mill was over 200 miles away. As daunting as it may seem to move such a large tree through the dense jungle, the loggers knew it was possible and took great pride in the challenge. Unfortunately the fell didn’t go as they planned and the gigantic tree felled into a ravine. After it felled and was cut in half a D7 Caterpillar Tractor was brought in to move the tree, but failed miserably. The Tree rested there for 18 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1971, a local sawmill manager heard the rumor of a highly figured gigantic Mahogany tree stuck in a ravine. A mill approached Robert with an offer to recover the tree from the jungle. Robert convinced a crew of workers to go into the jungle and bring home the tree. The crew quartered the two halves with chainsaws and dragged and trucked all eight pieces through 100 miles of jungle to the river. The quartered logs were sawn again and pushed into the river and floated 70 miles to the nearest mill, an old British steam powered operation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the tree was opened the crew knew why they had worked so hard recover the wood. The log was revealed to be the rarest of all figured Mahoganies, technically known as “blistered” or “quilted.” The cause of the grain is not known but is considered a genetic defect. Novack carefully supervised his crew and over the course of 12 days the tree was milled with the best cut possible being the objective every time. Lumber in this capacity is measured in a “board foot” which is 144 cubic inches, 12 x 12 x 1. Novack milled 12,000 bd foots out the tree and only one third of that was quilted. The other two thirds were wavy or ribbony and a blend of quilting with ribbons.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter been air dried to 35% the wood was shipped to Miami and the drying was completed in an evaporator kiln. It is typical of Mahogany to take up to 11 days to dry. The tree took 30 days to kiln dry because of its density. 1\/2 of the wood remained in Miami while the other 1\/2 was shipped to hand loggers in Sausalito California.
