Greenfield G3: This is Michael's G3, loosely based on the old Gibson Nick Lucas. This
once in a lifetime guitar was constructed from Brazilian Rosewood reclaimed from the beam in a 200 year
old house in Brazil. So, the back and sides are AT LEAST 200 years old. This Brazilian is the kind
that you've heard the fabled stories of. Some call it RIO. It has the rare, green highlights in it as
well as hints of other colors. It is predominantly VERY black with these beautiful highlights and rainbow-like sides.
This is the Sister Set of Brazilian to the one Michael used in Keef's (Rolling Stones' Keith Richards) next guitar.
It's pretty much a clone of Keef's, built in the same batch, same appointments (except Keef's has a 1 7/8" nut) with consecutive serial numbers.
The tone is from another dimension. The spalted maple rosette is bordered in Blue Paua. The top is
Lutz Spruce, with clarity and harp-like resonance. The body and fingerboard are bound in ebony. The
Ergonomic top Bevel is Ebony as well. This guitar is 13 frets to the body with a comfortable 1 13/16"
nut width. The Ebony bridge is pinless. The mahogany neck is strong and comfortable with a cool
swoosh or notch on the treble side at the upper frets. This is very nice for bracing your
left hand whilst playing those upper frets. The soundhole is bound in Ebony. Inside at the neckblock
there is a branded "g" logo. The headstock front & back plates are Brazilian Rosewood. The gold
tuning machines are 510 Gotohs with Ebonoid buttons. Here's a few more specs:
Scale length: 25.4" -- Body length: 19 1/4" -- Lower bout: 14 3/4" -- Upper bout: 11" --
Body depth at the tail: 4 1/8" -- Overall length: 38". Calton flight case included of course.

Greenfield Guitars are crafted and constructed by Michael Greenfield, in his Montreal shop. They incorporate many of the latest techniques and design features
while still being hand-built in the time honored tradition of the master guitarmakers of generations past.
A fine instrument starts with fine wood....
Michael buys only well seasoned master grade tone woods, which are handpicked by wood suppliers to meet his exacting standards.
Archtop guitars are crafted from select billets of the finest air dried, well-seasoned North American and European cello woods.
Most wood is then put away, for several more years, to age and season further in his shop’s humidity/temperature controlled environment before use.
Sets of wood are selected to best suit individual instruments. Michael judges each soundboard’s stiffness,
flexibility and the tap tone it produces. It is then tailored to the correct dimension for that individual piece of wood, a crucial step
in developing each instrument’s full tonal potential.
Parabolic soundboards....
Thinner soundboards sound better, but lack the structural integrity to withstand the tension of the strings.
The use of parabolic soundboards, for Michael's steel string and classical guitars, virtually eliminates top deformation
and self-destruction. The strength created by arching the soundboard and braces enables thinning of
the soundboard significantly, while preventing the otherwise inevitable top collapse or excessive bulge. The
thin soundboard produces greater bass and volume, while the precisely arched contour enhances the treble response
(like flexing a saw blade).
Parabolic workboard.... Each soundboard is built on a parabolic work board, computer
machined to a specific radius. Each brace is individually contoured to match this radius perfectly. Then the braces are
glued to the soundboard in a vacuum chamber, while still on the parabolic work board ensuring a perfect fit.
This exerts an extremely even pressure over the entire surface of the parts being glued, resulting in the parts being
stress free, which means they are free to vibrate more naturally, when tensioned by the strings. The braces
are then scalloped and each soundboard is individually voiced to bring out it’s full tonal potential. The back plate of
the instrument is built in much the same way on a separate work board of a different radius.
The top and back plates of Greenfield arch top guitars are carved by hand. No duplicating carvers are used. This
affords the opportunity to "get to know" each piece of wood and tailor the final shape and graduation of the arches to achieve a specific,
desired result.
The "X" brace is cut from split billets of Adirondack spruce and are hand fit to perfectly match the complex arch of the plate. Anything less than
a perfect fit would result in lost tone, power, some other anomalous harmonic distortion, buzz or "wolf tone" which would prevent the
instrument from realizing it’s maximum acoustic potential. Once the braces have been glued to the top plate, they are carefully carved and shaped by hand, while continuing to
tap and tune the plate. This is a crucial step in assuring a clear and articulate voice for each instrument.
In keeping with his quest for ultimate acoustic response, Michael has developed a "full contact bridge" for his
archtop guitars. For those seeking the ultimate acoustic, tonal response these bridges transfer the maximum amount of string
energy to the top plate.
Fine craftsmanship....
Greenfield guitars are built with pride in fine craftsmanship. This is a key factor in the sound of any instrument. Braces and bridges are glued
using animal hide glue. This natural glue has been used for centuries by makers of the finest musical instruments, for it's superior acoustic properties and resistance to "creep".
The inside of Greenfield guitars are super clean and sanded smooth. There is no glue "squeeze-out" inside a Greenfield guitar. After the
top and back plate are glued to the sides, the final "tuning" of all archtop, steel string and classical guitar bodies is done using tap tones and checking for stiffness and
flexibility – another key step in getting the best possible sound from each individual instrument.
Careful use of well seasoned wood and Michael's climate controlled workshop helps to ensure the stability of each instrument throughout seasonal changes. With normal care and maintenance, each guitar will last a lifetime.
Bodies are bound with wood bindings, bordered with contrasting, carefully mitered purfling for an elegant, refined look. All bindings and purflings
are made in Michael's shop. This enables him to create a more individual "look" for his instruments while maintaining a higher standard of quality.
Abalone edging and fingerboards inlayed with shell are upgrade options.
The necks on most Greenfield guitars are fabricated from multiple laminates of the finest, well-seasoned, air-dried lumber. A non-compressive, double
acting truss rod is standard on all models. All guitars are fitted with carbon graphite rods, which are inlayed into the neck, running it’s entire length and into the peghead
(extending into the neck extension on archtop guitars). Carbon graphite has a higher stiffness to weight ratio than steel and is extremely light, adding very
little weight to the overall instrument. This makes for an extremely true and stable neck, which is also very energy efficient, virtually eliminating "dead spots". The peghead is sandwiched by multiple, contrasting
laminations of beautiful wood veneers. Besides it's visual aesthetic, this makes for a very strong, virtually unbreakable peghead. Each neck is then hand carved.
The fingerboard is bound to hide the fret ends giving a better "feel" for the player. Each instrument is carefully fretted followed by a perfect leveling, crowning and
polishing after the neck is set to the body. A flawless, high gloss, nitrocellulose lacquer finish is standard on all Greenfield guitars. The finishes are kept as thin
as possible so as not to impede tone. The final finish is only about .003" thick!
Greenfield guitars, in their simplest form, combine the best of old world craftsmanship with the latest in guitar
building technology. Meticulous attention is paid to every detail, ensuring each guitar is built of the highest quality. These
uncompromising standards are reflected in the sound and playability of each instrument.
