The design of the Modèle Elan is based on the earliest models created by the Selmer Company under the direction of Mario Maccaferri. This instrument utilizes a short scale length in combination with a 12 fret neck join and the 'grande bouche' D-shaped soundhole.

Tonally, this instrument offers a rich, warm sound with complimentary overtones that are often described as being similar to a classical guitar. Typically this instrument has been regarded as the rhythm guitar in Gypsy Jazz as its percussive punch offers a solid underpinning for soloists. While some players may find its 12 frets limiting, there should be no mistaking its capabilities as a lead instrument.
