The top is European spruce and the bridge and fingerboard are ebony. The scale is 24.9”. Robert Johnson’s famous L-1 was the point of departure for this guitar. This R-1 has a slightly longer string length than the original, slightly bigger body, and 14 frets to the neck. The soundboard finish is Tom’s French polish and oil varnish composite with nitrocellulose on the back, sides and neck.

The tone is very clear and deep. Each note has a beautifully balanced blend of fundamental and overtones, with the overtones creating a sort of “glow” around the note. Like a good maple arch-top, the guitar responds well to different types of playing and can produce abundant tone colors.
